Summary: Two-step back translation is needed when no one on the team speaks both the target language and the consultant's language. In this case, the first-step back translation is performed by someone who can speak the target language and an intermediate language, for example the language of wider communication (LWC) in that area. Then, for the second-step back translation, another person will translate from that LWC into the consultant's language.

Enabling Two Step Back Translation is found in the Workflow Configuration, Consultant Check stage settings.

2-step back translation by default is turned off. To turn it on, simply tap on the toggle switch.



Once enabled the 2-step options will appear on both - 
A. Passage Back Translate &
B. Segment Back Translate sub-menu.

  

Passage and Segment back translations are by default enabled but can be turned off with the toggle switch.


To clarify, 
Step 1 is the settings for BT 1
Step 2 is the settings for BT 2

So, you can enable/disable Passage/Segment Back Translate for BT person, if required.

Intermediate Language – Language spoken between Back translators 1 and 2 and sometimes the Translation Team.

Consultant Language Language spoken between Back translator 2 and the consultant.

 
Within the Passage and Segment settings users can turn on/off guidance, Passage/Section Review pages and enable Transcribe on the Passage and/or Segment level.


With 2-step enabled, a second back translator (BT 2) role will show in the Roles Assignments page and will need a second back translator assigned.
